US Rejects Okonjo-Iweala for WTO

The United States rejected former Nigerian Finance Minister Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala for the leadership of the World Trade Organization. Along with South Korea, the US declined to give the unanimous support to Nigeria’s nominee.  While Okonjo-Iweala has remained popular within the WTO, her reputation during two stints in Nigeria’s government (under Presidents Obasanjo and Jonathan) was less than stellar.  According to unnamed sources within the U.S. government, allegations of corruption have dogged her since the Obasanjo era and have yet to be resolved.
It is unclear whether her candidacy will succeed, but Nigeria and the WTO continue to back her candidacy.
