Guinea-Bissau: Controversial Journalist Attacked

Controversial independent journalist Antonio Aly Silva was kidnapped and beaten on March 9, then dumped in an industrial zone in the capital Bissau. Motives are unclear, but Aly Silva blames the government for the attack.  Aly Silva is known for his access to all of Guinea-Bissau’s political society, but has been accused of trafficking in conspiracy theories in his reporting.

Guinea-Bissau: Embalo Confirmed As President

Despite confusion about the electoral results, Guinea-Bissau’s national electoral commission confirmed Umaro Cissoko Embalo as winner of the nation’s presidential elections.
Guinea-Bissau typically conducts elections very well and this round was not different.  However, complaints arose about irregularities in the announced results.  After the Supreme Court asked for clarification  of the tally, observers were concerned about possible political disruptions.  However, the electoral commission reconfirmed its announcement that Embalo won 54% of the vote.
While many hope these elections will minimize the political impasse that has blocked governance for the past five years, with the President from MADEM-15 and the National Assembly controlled by the PAIGC, the prospects for continued political impasse remains.
